4 Free Crochet Hair Clip Patterns with Flower Tassels: Sunflower, Butterfly, Rose & Daisy

Handmade hair accessories are one of the best small crochet projects: quick to make, cheap, and great for gifts or craft-fair stock. In this post you’ll learn how to make four crochet hair clips with cascading flower vines. Each has a statement motif at the top and long dangling strands of leaves, buds, and mini blossoms.

  • 🌻 Sunflower hair clip
  • 🦋 Purple butterfly hair clip with pearls
  • 🌹 Red rose and rosebud hair clip
  • 🌼 White daisy cluster hair clip

All four use the same basic building blocks (leaf, vine strand, mini flower), so once you’ve learned one, the others come quickly. This is a great beginner-to-intermediate crochet pattern collection.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Yarn: 100% mercerized cotton or milk cotton, fingering to DK weight (2–3 mm). Cotton holds its shape better than acrylic.
  • Colors: Mustard yellow, orange, dark brown, green (two shades if you like), purple, lavender, white, red, and pale yellow
  • Hook: 2.0–2.5 mm. Go small so the stitches are tight with no gaps.
  • Hair clip base: A 7–9 cm metal French barrette or alligator clip
  • Extras: 4–6 mm pearl beads (butterfly), tapestry needle, sewing thread, small scissors, stitch marker, fabric glue or hot glue, small piece of felt for backing
  • Stuffing: A tiny amount of fiberfill for the rosebuds

Finished size: Motif about 6–8 cm wide. Tassels are 18–28 cm long.

Basic Building Blocks (Used in All 4 Patterns)

1. Crochet Leaf (make in green)

Ch 7.

  1. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, hdc.
  2. (Sc, sl st, sc) in the last ch.
  3. Working along the underside of the chain: hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st in the last st.
  4. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

Mini leaf: Ch 5. Sl st in 2nd ch, sc, hdc, sc. Work (sl st, sc) in the last ch, then sc, hdc, sl st down the other side.

2. Vine Strand

Chain to the length you need (about 1 cm per 2.5 chains). Work sl st into the back bump of each chain for a firmer, rounder cord. Fasten off, leaving a tail at both ends.

3. Mini Flower (5 petals)

  • Center color: MR, 5 sc, join with sl st, fasten off.
  • Petal color: Join in the FLO of any st. (Sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st) in the same st. Repeat in each st around (5 petals). Fasten off and weave in the ends.

4. How to Attach Leaves and Flowers to a Vine

Lay the vine flat and sew the leaves and mini flowers onto it with the tails. Alternate sides, spacing leaves every 2–3 cm. Put a flower or bud at the very bottom of each strand.

5. Making the Clip Base

Cut an oval of felt a little smaller than your clip. Crochet the motif, sew it onto the felt, then sew or glue the felt onto the barrette. Anchor the tassel strands under the motif, between the felt and the clip, so the join is hidden.

Finishing Tips for Professional Results

  1. Block your pieces. Gently steam the flowers and leaves, or mist and press them flat.
  2. Stiffen delicate parts. A mix of white glue and water brushed on petals and leaves helps them hold their shape.
  3. Secure every join twice. Hair accessories take a lot of pulling.
  4. Use a smaller hook than the yarn label suggests for tight, sturdy fabric.
  5. Space your tassel strands. Different lengths give the cascading, natural look.

FAQ: Crochet Hair Accessories

What yarn is best for crochet hair clips?
Mercerized cotton is best. It’s smooth, holds shape, and doesn’t fuzz or snag hair like some acrylics.

Are these patterns beginner-friendly?
The leaf, vine, and daisy are beginner-friendly. The rose and butterfly are intermediate because of the shaping and assembly.

How long does each hair clip take?
About 2–4 hours depending on your speed and the number of tassel strands.

Can I sell items made from this pattern?
You’re welcome to sell finished items you make. Please credit this blog and don’t resell or redistribute the pattern text itself.

How do I wash crochet hair clips?
Hand wash gently in cool water, reshape while damp, and air dry flat. Don’t wet the pearls or metal clip for long.
