A Little Moon and Star to Brighten Your Space

This crochet crescent moon with a golden star is one of those small projects that looks far more impressive than the time it takes. The cream moon has chunky puff stitches along the outer curve and a delicate lace edge on the inside. A tiny metallic-gold star hangs from its tip.

It works as a Ramadan or Eid decoration, a boho nursery mobile piece, a Christmas tree ornament, a window hanging or a handmade gift. It uses very little yarn, so it’s a good way to use up scraps.

A note on this pattern: It is written from the stitch chart and photo of the finished piece. Stitch counts can vary with yarn and tension, so work a quick test moon first and use the chart as your visual guide. Adjust counts slightly if your crescent curls too much or too little.

What You’ll Need

Yarn

  • Cream or ecru cotton, DK or light worsted weight (about 15 g) for the moon
  • Metallic gold or mustard thread or fingering yarn (about 5 g) for the star

Tools

  • 3.0 mm crochet hook for the moon (go up or down a size to match your yarn)
  • 2.0–2.5 mm hook for the star (the gold thread is thinner)
  • Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers
  • Starch or fabric stiffener and pins (optional, for blocking)

Finished size: the moon is about 12–13 cm (5 in) tall, and the star is about 4 cm (1.5 in) across.

Crochet Crescent Moon Pattern

Foundation

Ch 31 loosely.

Round 1: Oval Base

Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next 28 ch. Work 3 sc in the last ch. Continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain with 1 sc in each ch back to the start. Work 3 sc in the first ch and join with a sl st to the first sc. (about 64 sts, with 3-sc tips at both ends)

Mark one tip as your top tip. This is where the hanging star will attach.

Round 2: Build the Crescent

Ch 1.

  • Inner edge: sc in each of the next 29 sts.
  • Bottom tip: 2 sc in each of the next 3 sts.
  • Outer edge: puff in the next st, ch 1, skip 1 st. Repeat 14 times, then puff in the last st of the side.
  • Top tip: 2 sc in each of the next 3 sts.

Join with a sl st.

Round 3: Shape the Curve

Ch 1.

  • Inner edge: sc in each st, working sc2tog about every 5th st to tighten the inside curve.
  • Tips: 2 sc in the middle st of each tip.
  • Outer edge: work 1 sc in each puff and 2 sc in each ch-1 sp.

Join with a sl st.

Round 4: Lace and Long-Stitch Edge

Ch 3 (counts as a dc).

  • Outer edge: dc in the next st, then ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in the next st. Repeat all the way around the outer curve and through the tips. Work tr instead of dc at the widest part of the curve for a more dramatic scalloped line.
  • Inner edge: sl st in each st. Optionally work ch 3, skip 1, sl st to create the lacy loops seen on the inner curve of the chart.

Join with a sl st, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Round 5 (Optional): Finishing Edge

Join yarn at the top tip. Sc evenly around the entire moon, working sc in each dc and 1 sc in each ch-1 sp. This neatens the outline and gives a firmer edge for hanging.

Hanging Loop

Join yarn at the back of the top tip and ch 15. Sl st into the same spot to form a loop. Fasten off.

Crochet Star Ornament Pattern

Use the gold thread and the smaller hook.

Round 1: Make a MR and work 10 sc into it. Pull tight and join with a sl st.

Round 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st. Repeat 5 times. (15 sts) Join.

Round 3 (points): Ch 3. Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in the next ch. Sl st in each of the next 3 sts of Round 2. Repeat 5 times for 5 star points. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Hanging chain: Join gold thread to one point and ch 12 loosely. Sl st into the moon’s top tip, working through the inside curve so the star dangles within the crescent. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Finishing Tips for a Professional Look

  1. Block it. Pin the moon flat, spritz it with starch or stiffener and let it dry fully. Cotton blocks beautifully and the puffs become more defined.
  2. Stiffen the star. A little diluted craft glue or starch keeps the points crisp.
  3. Mind your tension. If the crescent flattens out, use a slightly smaller hook on the inner edge. If it curls too tightly, loosen the outer edge.
  4. Try other colors. White and silver look good for winter, sage and brass for boho decor, and navy and gold for a night-sky effect.

Ways to Use Your Crochet Moon and Star

  • Ramadan and Eid wall hangings or window decor
  • Nursery mobiles (attach several in different sizes)
  • Christmas tree ornaments or gift toppers
  • Car mirror charms
  • Handmade gifts and craft-fair items
  • Boho garlands, with moons and stars alternating on a cord

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this crochet moon pattern beginner-friendly?
Yes, if you know basic stitches. The puff stitch is the only specialty technique.

What yarn works best?
Cotton holds shape and blocks well. Acrylic works too, but it is softer and may need more stiffening.

Can I make it bigger?
Yes. Start with a longer foundation chain (ch 41 or more) and use a thicker yarn with a larger hook.

How long does it take?
Most crocheters finish the moon and star in 1–2 hours.

Can I sell items made from this pattern?
Check the original designer’s terms. If you adapt this pattern, credit the source and sell your finished items at your own discretion.
