About Pigs in a Blanket

Pigs in a Blanket is an American classic that transcends generations and gatherings. I initially whipped these up for a weekend family lunch and quickly found them to be a staple for parties and cozy movie nights alike. Testing various dipping sauces and customizing flavors made this recipe budget-friendly and highly adaptable for any occasion.

  • Quick prep allows for last-minute snack cravings.
  • Budget-friendly, making it ideal for gatherings.
  • A family favorite appreciated by both kids and adults.
  • Did you know? The cocktail weenie dates back to the 1940s, making it a nostalgic bite for many!

Key Ingredients & Their Roles

  • Crescent Rolls: Soft and flaky exterior; for a twist, try using puff pastry for an extra crisp.
  • Cocktail Weenies: The star ingredient, these bite-sized sausages enhance flavor; substitute turkey or vegetarian options for preferences.
  • Butter: Adds richness and enhances browning; using garlic butter can elevate the aroma.
  • Dijon Mustard: Offers a tangy kick; you can exchange it for yellow mustard if you prefer mild flavors.

How to Make Pigs in a Blanket

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, which will help with cleanup.
  2. Unroll the crescent dough, pressing the seams together to create a cohesive sheet. My first attempts had uneven seams, making them hard to roll!
  3. With a pizza cutter, slice the dough into four equal sections, then cut each section into triangles. The slices don’t need to be perfect; they still taste great.
  4. Place a cocktail weenie at the wider end of each triangle and roll it up tightly. Repeat until all triangles are used, placing them a bit spaced on the baking sheet.
  5. Brush the tops with melted butter for that golden finish.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown and invitingly aromatic.
  7. For the honey mustard sauce, mix the Dijon, mayonnaise, honey, cayenne, and salt in a bowl; this sauce is what makes every bite even more memorable.

Pro Tips & Troubleshooting

  • I discovered that pressing the seams is crucial for avoiding leaks – my first batch spilled a bit of filling!
  • If your rolls start browning too fast, cover them loosely with foil until cooked through; this prevents burning.
  • Try adding cheese before rolling for a melty surprise; cheddar pairs nicely with the weenies.
  • To scale, simply double the ingredients for larger gatherings without compromising flavor.

Storage & Make-Ahead Guide

You can store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freezing is also a great option; they’ll keep for about 2 months. When reheating, pop them in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes to maintain crispiness. I once froze them after baking, and they still tasted delightful upon reheating!

Serving Suggestions

These Pigs in a Blanket are delightful on their own or served alongside a fresh garden salad for a balanced meal. Pair them with my Christmas Pudding for a festive treat.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use other sausages instead of cocktail weenies? Yes, any small sausage like mini bratwursts or veggie options work well!
  • How do I ensure my crescents don’t burn? Keep an eye on them, especially near the end of baking; cover with foil if needed.
  • Are these suitable for freezing? Absolutely! Just allow them to cool completely before freezing.
  • How long does it take to bake from frozen? Bake for about 20-25 minutes at 375°F, checking for golden color.
  • Can I prepare the rolls ahead of time? Yes, assemble them, cover tightly, and store in the fridge for up to a day before baking.
