About Candied Yams

Candied Yams have a special place on our holiday table, often bringing back sweet memories of family gatherings. As I tested this dish, I learned how simple adjustments could enhance the flavor and presentation. It’s a playful balance of classic ingredients that’s both budget-friendly and celebratory.

  • Quick prep makes it a great choice for busy cooks during the holidays.
  • Budget-friendly, relying on pantry staples and seasonal ingredients.
  • A family favorite that transforms ordinary sweet potatoes into something extraordinary.
  • This dish often appears in Southern American cuisine, revered for its comfort and richness.

Key Ingredients & Their Roles

  • Sweet Potatoes: The base, making the dish sweet and starchy. Choose firm, blemish-free potatoes for the best results.
  • Butter: Adds richness; for a healthier option, consider coconut oil.
  • Dark Brown Sugar: Provides a deep molasses flavor that enhances sweetness. Light brown sugar can be used in a pinch.
  • Cinnamon & Nutmeg: These spices add warmth and depth; feel free to adjust according to preference.

How to Make Candied Yams

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Begin by washing, peeling, and then slicing the sweet potatoes into ½-inch thick rounds. Arrange them nicely in a greased 3-quart casserole dish.
  2. In a light-colored pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir constantly until the milk solids turn golden brown and release a nutty fragrance. Watch closely—it can change quickly!
  3. Once browned, stir in brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Remove from heat and mix in vanilla extract and fresh orange juice. Pour this heavenly glaze over the sweet potatoes without mixing. Cover the dish with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.

Pro Tips & Troubleshooting

  • In my testing, I found that browning the butter adds a unique depth of flavor; don’t skip this step!
  • A common pitfall is undercooking; make sure the sweet potatoes are fork-tender before finishing.
  • Enhance the dish with a layer of pecans or a sprinkle of marshmallows for a festive touch.
  • Scaling the recipe is simple; just maintain the same ratios, whether you double or halve.

Storage & Make-Ahead Guide

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. For longer storage, they freeze well for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven for about 20 minutes at 350°F for the best texture. When I stored some for a week, I noticed how the spices deepened in flavor—delicious!
