Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar optional, for a touch of sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  •
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  • Heat the Olive Oil: In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Cook the Onion and Garlic: Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan. Sauté for 2-3 minutes or until softened and fragrant.
  • Add Tomatoes: Stir in crushed tomatoes and tomato paste.
  • Season the Sauce: Add sugar (if using), basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  • Simmer: Reduce the heat and simmer the sauce for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Taste and Adjust: Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as necessary. Add more herbs, salt, or sugar if desired.
  •
  • Serve: Pour the sauce over your favorite pasta and garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

For a thicker sauce, simmer it for longer to allow it to reduce.
If you like spicy food, you can add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for extra heat.
To make it creamy, add a bit of heavy cream or ricotta cheese at the end.
For a gluten-free dish, serve with gluten-free pasta.
