Skillet Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 2 tbsp butter unsalted
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 1 lb green beans trimmed and halved

Sauce & Seasoning

  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup bourbon
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder optional
  • 0.25 tsp red pepper flakes optional
  • 1 small lemon zested, optional

Instructions
 

Cook Bacon & Sauté Aromatics

  • In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook chopped bacon until crisp, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  • Transfer bacon to a paper towel–lined plate and discard all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon grease.
  • Add butter, melt, then stir in diced onion and sauté until tender and translucent, about 3 minutes.

Make Sauce & Cook Beans

  • Stir in brown sugar and bourbon; bring to a simmer and cook until the sugar dissolves and the bourbon reduces by half, about 2 minutes.
  • Add green beans, water, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes; stir to coat well.
  • Cover and cook until beans are tender yet retain a slight snap, about 10 minutes, stirring halfway through.
  • Uncover, stir in crispy bacon and lemon zest, then serve immediately.

Notes

Testing Note #1: Trimming beans in uniform pieces shaved off prep time and ensured even cooking.
Testing Note #2: If beans brown too quickly, lower the heat and add a splash more water to prevent sticking.
Testing Note #3: Let the dish cool completely before sealing in an airtight container to keep the beans firm.
