- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- ½ cup water
- 1 0.15 oz packet unsweetened Kool-Aid powder (any flavor)
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
-
- Optional: Food coloring to enhance the color of your chosen Kool-Aid flavor
Prepare Your Workspace: Lightly grease a baking sheet or a large plate with cooking spray or butter to prevent the taffy from sticking as it cools.
Cook the Sugar Mixture: In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves. Once dissolved, stop stirring and let the mixture come to a boil. Monitor the temperature with a candy thermometer. Cook until it reaches 250°F–260°F (soft-ball stage).
Add Flavor and Color: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the Kool-Aid powder and baking soda. The mixture will bubble up slightly—this is normal. Add food coloring if desired to enhance the color.
Cool and Stretch: Pour the hot mixture onto the prepared baking sheet or plate. Allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes until it’s safe to handle. Grease your hands with butter or cooking spray, then begin pulling and stretching the taffy. This process will take about 10-15 minutes, but it's key to achieving a light and airy texture.
Shape and Cut: Once the taffy has cooled enough to handle, roll it into a long rope. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut it into bite-sized pieces. Wrap each piece in wax paper or plastic wrap to keep it fresh.
Storage: Store the wrapped taffy in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Texture Tip: If your taffy becomes too hard, place it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it.
Flavor Variations: Experiment with mixing different Kool-Aid flavors, like tropical punch with cherry, for a new twist.
