- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg plus more for garnish
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ to 1 cup rum bourbon, or brandy (optional, adjust to taste)
Whisk eggs and sugar until pale and fluffy.
Heat milk and cream in a saucepan until steaming (do not boil).
Temper eggs by slowly adding hot milk mixture while whisking.
Pour mixture back into saucepan, cook on low until slightly thickened.
