Ingredients

  • 1 envelope active dry yeast about 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • ½ cup warm water around 105°F
  • 1 cup whole milk room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour more if needed
  • ½ tablespoon salt
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • Melted butter for brushing on top

Instructions

  • Bloom the Yeast: Dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, and sugar. Add the frothy yeast mixture and stir well.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients: Gradually add flour and salt to the wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  • Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased baking pan.
  • Second Rise: Cover the shaped rolls with a towel and let them rise again until puffy (about 1 hour).
  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the Rolls: Brush the tops with an egg wash or melted butter, then bake for 20–30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool and Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving warm with additional melted butter if desired.

Notes

For best results, use fresh yeast.
Experiment with flavors by adding herbs or cheese to the dough.
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
