Ingredients

  • 4 medium-sized yams sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup water or orange juice
  • Optional: mini marshmallows and chopped pecans for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the Yams: Wash, peel, and slice the yams into 1/2 inch thick rounds.
  • Make the Glaze: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add either water or orange juice to create a smooth glaze.
  • Layer the Yams: In a greased baking dish, arrange the sliced yams in layers. Pour the glaze over the yams evenly. If desired, sprinkle mini marshmallows and chopped pecans on top for added flavor and texture.
  • Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Afterward, uncover and baste the yams with the glaze, then return to the oven for an additional 15-20 minutes until they are tender and caramelized.
  • Serve: Once done, remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the candied yams warm as a delightful side dish.
